Kaddy Thomas Elijah's Hope CIC
I’m Kaddy Thomas, founder of Elijah’s Hope, a community interest company (CIC) that aims to provide information and support to families who are living with Apert Syndrome in the UK and internationally.
Both my 11-year-old son, Elijah, and I have Apert Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterised by the premature fusion of certain skull bones (craniosynostosis) and fusion of a varied number of fingers and toes (syndactyly). Elijah also has complex care needs, including postural care, as the result of a brain injury caused by a post-surgical infection when he was 18 months old.
I work with families, health care professionals, and multiple rare disease forums, as well as managing Elijah’s Personalised Health Budget, which means that I have a unique perspective as a parent, a postural care advocate, package manager, and founder of a CIC.
I am a leading voice for the importance of 24-hour postural care to prevent body shape distortion in people with limited movement or complex disabilities; a preventative approach can potentially save the NHS tens of thousands of pounds each year, as well as safeguarding lives. In 2015, I hosted Elijah’s First International Conference: The Living University of Postural Care, which brought together postural care experts from across the globe to share best practice. A second conference is planned for later this year.
I am available for public speaking and keynote presentations, as well as to provide expert opinions about Apert Syndrome, postural care and night-time positioning, and Personal Health Budgets to the media. I am a passionate, thought-provoking and engaging speaker who will cast new light on many of the issues above.
